photographic grids / ocean meditations
artist statement and process description: amended 3/2/06
Growing up in Northern California, I spent long days in the ocean and the countryside, swimming, surfing and generally running around. There I developed a connection with nature, often feeling more at home while in the water or in a tree than at home. Through photography, I seek out and explore the organic forms and patterns that offer a window into the magic that is nature and that, for me, create a sense of peace.
These latest photographs came about as a study of the subtle variations the horizon offers from day to day and even moment to moment. Shooting the same subject over and over, I quickly had a pile of 4x6 inch work prints that I eventually put together as a sort of puzzle into seasonal groups or to make up a whole image. Some are made from the same day while others span several days or weeks. Once finished, I scanned the negatives, built the final images in Photoshop, and then printed with the Lightjet process, which digitally exposes traditional photographic papers. They are finished with a glossy lamination and mounted on aluminum panel.
